Shotokan karate is a system of Okinawan Karate founded in 1936 by Gichin Funakoshi and Yoshitaka Funakoshi in Japan. Shotokan is one of the five traditional karate styles.Rick Henderson brings the Americanized version of Shotkan to Binghamton—founded by Master Hamilton in the 1960's, who after returning to Harlem, NYC from Military service; where he trained in Shotokan in Japan, realized that traditional Shotokan was not modernized enough to transfer into the challenges of NYC streets.
With Shotokan you will learn through challenging and exciting course content that includes Kata, Self-defense and Sparring. Kata:
a set-sequence of karate moves organized into a prearranged fight against imaginary opponents. The kata consists of:
Kicks

Sweeps

Blocks
Throws
Stepping

Kumite (sparring):
is the practical application of kata to real opponents. Levels of sparring include beginner, intermediate, and freestyle (free) sparring.
